in Greece this year.
Welcome Aboard skippered sailing yacht Erato for an
unforgettable holiday, discovering the Greek seas,
islands and mainland ports on a luxury sailing
yacht with an experienced skipper.
Sailing in Greece goes back to prehistory. The
Odyssey is the chronicle of a sailing journey. It
took twenty years to complete and Odysseus was in
charge. It is a fascinating story of men pitting
themselves against the gods and also it is a pilot
book of the navigable world of ancient times.
Greece consists of the continental segment which is
surrounded by the Aegean Sea to the East, the
Cretan Sea to the South and the Ionian Sea to the
West.
Our cruising ground is the large number of islands
in the Aegean and Ionian sea.
- The Cyclades is a group of 39 islands, of which
only 24 are inhabited.
- The Sporades, situated along Greece's central
mainland conserve the authentic island habitat and
tradition, which has remained unchanged over the
centuries.
- The Dodecanese in the south-east consists of
twelve large islands and other smaller ones, each
with its unique characteristics and charm.
- The stretch from the Attica coast to that of
Peloponnese, is filled with yet another group of
islands in the Saronic and Argolic Gulf. Each one
different from the others.
- The Ionian Sea with its 7 main islands is another
beautiful area to explore. It is a calmer area with
moderate winds coming up daily in the summer
months.
The geographic position of Greece forms the weather
patterns. Typically in the hot summer months there
is a northerly wind, the meltemi, moderating the
heat. In the colder winters, warm southerly winds
prevail.
This is reliable enough for trade in ancient times
to have developed. With the square sails of that
time, a trading vessel would sail before the wind.
To the south, in the summer, selling or exchanging
goods at each stop and back to the north when the
southerlies of winter set in, signaling the time to
start getting back.
Summer or winter, Greece is famous for the
sunshine. There are more than 3000 hours of
sunshine per year. The heat in the summer can raise
sea water temperatures from 25 to 28 degrees from
June to October.
The vegetation and climate go hand in hand with the
geographic diversity of Greece. The variety of
vegetation is extraordinary. More than 6000
indigenous plants have been found, of which 250 are
in Crete. This is the result of the geographic
positioning of Greece, located between the
continents of Europe and Africa. The trees are of
medium size. Various species of pines, oaks, olive,
fruit and palms in abundance.
What often looks like a bare rock from a distance
is really rich with bushes, wild flowers and herbs
offering a home to insects, birds and other small
animals.
The sea is also surprisingly full of fish turtles
and aquatic mammals such as dolphins and seals.
Maybe you would prefer to relax in the sun, visit
the well known Greek islands and enjoy the famous
Greek hospitality and food.
